Predicting the Best Player Each AL East Team Will Add for 2026

The AL East has been very active already this offseason, but here are the best moves still on the table for each team in the division.

The American League East is going to be one of the most interesting divisions to keep track of this season, with a four-team race between the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees likely to be huge players in the postseason race, while the Rays are a team that can never truly be counted out.

Most of these teams made the playoffs last season, and each of them has made some moves already this offseason, but there’s still plenty to be done for each of them.

The Blue Jays signed premier free agent Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million deal, the Baltimore Orioles signed Pete Alonso and acquired Taylor Ward, the Red Sox traded for Sonny Gray, the Tampa Bay Rays signed OF Cedric Mullins and LHP Steven Matz, and the Yankees brought back OF Trent Grisham on a Qualifying Offer.

The AL East has been busy so far, and these teams are certainly not finished.

The Winter Meetings have come and gone, and front offices have been discussing moves all day, every day, while all teams are converging in Florida to kickstart this offseason even further.

Today, we are going to look at the best addition each team in the AL East can make this offseason.

It is important to note, these are moves that bring each team a new player, so Cody Bellinger back to the Yankees or Bo Bichette back to the Blue Jays were not on the table when these predictions were made.

Blue Jays Land the Golden Goose, Sign Kyle Tucker

The Blue Jays have already made the splash of the offseason thus far in landing Dylan Cease on the biggest contract in franchise history, but their eyes are still on the biggest prize in outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Tucker just came off a good year with the Cubs in which he slugged 22 home runs, 22 doubles, and slashed .266/.377/.464.

This was far from his best season, but it was enough for him to take home his second career Silver Slugger Award and help the Cubs reach the postseason, in which they pushed the Milwaukee Brewers to a win-or-go-home Game 5 in the NLDS.

The Blue Jays are still on the hunt for a big bat to add to their lineup, and Tucker’s left-handed power swing could be exactly what they need.

Tucker is by far the marquee hitter on the market this offseason, and Toronto looks to be heavily in the mix for his services. The Blue Jays are one of his most likely landing spots, and with Dylan Cease’s recent signing, they look like a very appealing free agent destination.

The Blue Jays have shown that they’re going all-in this offseason, already agreeing to contracts with Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers, who are all pitchers – they’re still looking for a bat to add to their already potent offense, and Tucker fits the profile perfectly.

Tucker would slot into the outfield for the Blue Jays, likely alongside a combination of George Springer, Daulton Varsho, and Anthony Santander – one of the league’s most talented outfields without a doubt.

Kyle Tucker is the golden goose of this offseason, and the Jays are one of the only teams that have a serious chance to bring in his services.

Yankees Poach Their Rivals by Landing Bo Bichette

The New York Yankees desperately need to make a big move this offseason, as they’ve watched from the sidelines while the rest of the division has made many moves and improved their rosters.

Aside from offering Trent Grisham a Qualifying Offer ($22.05 million), the Yankees have been relatively quiet, and Bo Bichette could be the splash they need to make.

For ages, the Yankees have been among the top destinations for star players, and Bichette has certainly tormented them plenty over his years in Toronto.

While the Blue Jays could still be in the mix for Bichette, New York could make a statement by swooping in and grabbing the two-time All-Star.

Bo showed his skill set on a global stage during the 2025 World Series, including a three-run home run early in Game 7 to put Toronto in the lead, and the Yankees are going to be on the prowl for an improvement at shortstop.

Anthony Volpe slashed a meager .212/.272/.391 this season, and in the postseason, he struck out in over sixty percent of his plate appearances. Bichette would not only be a superstar addition, but would solve their problem at shortstop.

Bichette’s defensive ability has always been a little iffy, but Volpe’s -6 OAA ranked him in just the sixth percentile league-wide. Bo’s -10 FRV at shortstop was the worst in baseball this season, but if he can even perform at a league-average mark, he would be an improvement from Volpe in every possible way compared to what they got last year.

It has been predicted that Bo will sign a hefty and lengthy deal in free agency, and the Yankees have never shied away from shelling out the big bucks in free agency.

Although it’s still up in the air what the most likely possibility is for Bichette, the Yankees are definitely a landing spot, and would likely be the best impact player they could add short of Kyle Tucker or a reunion with Cody Bellinger.

Red Sox Bolster Rotation, Trade for MacKenzie Gore

The Boston Red Sox have already made incredible moves over the last year or so to improve their starting rotation, beginning with acquiring Garrett Crochet from the White Sox last offseason and most recently involving their trade for Sonny Gray from the Cardinals.

The Red Sox had some great performances from Crochet, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito in 2025, but also had some poor ones from the back-end of their rotation.

Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, and Richard Fitts combined for 41 starts worth 201.0 innings with a combined 5.91 ERA, and Boston seems to have recognized the need to improve in their rotation depth. Fitts was traded to the Cardinals in the Gray trade, Buehler is a free agent, and Houck underwent Tommy John Surgery late last season, so he’ll be out for a while.

The stars seem to be aligning for the Red Sox to make another big move and pursue one of the top trade candidates in baseball in MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals.

The Nats have made it clear recently that they intend to hear trade offers on both Gore and shortstop CJ Abrams, and the Red Sox haven’t exactly been afraid of trading prospects in recent seasons.

Gore notched a 4.17 ERA over 30 starts and 159.2 innings in 2025, making his first career All-Star appearance, and was by far the most valuable pitcher on the Washington Nationals with a 2.9 fWAR this season.

Coming into the All-Star break, Gore ranked top-5 in all of MLB in strikeouts (139) and was among the most dominant pitchers in the league this year on a 66-win Nationals team that missed the playoffs by a wide margin.

Boston only won one playoff game in 2025, and they don’t seem happy settling for this at all.

Especially when given the improvements made by the Blue Jays and Orioles this offseason, the Red Sox probably have something else up their sleeves before the 2026 season is upon us.

MacKenzie Gore could be a perfect addition to their pitching staff, and they definitely have the prospect pool to land him.

Orioles Continue to Spend and Pick Up Michael King

Michael King just enjoyed a solid but injury-riddled 2025 season in which he posted a nice 3.43 ERA over 73.1 innings of work. He was also one of 13 pitchers to record a complete-game shutout as he blanked the Colorado Rockies in April.

The Baltimore Orioles recently acquired Taylor Ward from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for young right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez, and they’ve shown us that they’re far from done this offseason.

On Wednesday, the Orioles made a huge move in signing first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million deal, almost the biggest contract in Orioles history (Chris Davis, $161 million).

They’ve made these moves to bolster their lineup, but their rotation still needs some help. The Orioles were already a man down in 2025 because of Rodriguez’s rehab from an elbow injury, but now they’ll be without his services entirely.

Michael King is one of the highest upside arms in free agency. He just has to stay healthy.

In 2024, in what was his first and only full season as a healthy starting pitcher, King threw 173.2 innings to the tune of a 2.95 ERA for the Padres and finished seventh in NL Cy Young voting.

Baltimore saw three division rivals reach the postseason last season, and they are still looking for their first playoff victory since 2012.

Listed as one of Just Baseball’s potential landing spots for King, the Orioles have shown they’re willing to spend and make changes to their roster.

They severely underperformed expectations in 2025 thanks to poor performances from Adley Rutschman, Ryan Mountcastle, Zach Eflin, Tomoyuki Sugano, and many more.

The Baltimore Orioles would be much stronger and more feared in the AL East with the addition of a strong starter like Michael King, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them make more moves sooner than later.

Rays Make a Splash and Sign JT Realmuto

The Tampa Bay Rays have never been known as a team to spend a lot of money in free agency, but they’ve made a few moves already this offseason in their signings of outfielder Cedric Mullins (1 year, $7 million) and left-handed pitcher Steven Matz (2 years, $15 million).

JT Realmuto is coming off a five-year, $115 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, and in his time with the Phillies (2019-2025), he made two All-Star games, won two Silver Sluggers, two Gold Gloves, and received NL MVP votes in two different seasons.

Realmuto has long been considered one of the league’s best game-callers behind the plate, and Tampa Bay could use a player with as impressive a track record.

Realmuto slashed .257/.315/.384 with just 12 home runs and 52 RBI in what was his worst offensive season as a Phillie, and his first season with a batting average under .260 since 2015.

He may not be in his prime anymore, but he can certainly help a team that is on the outskirts of the playoff picture.

The Rays had a bottom-10 offense in MLB last season in terms of fWAR (15.7) and had the third-least valuable catcher’s position by fWAR (0.3), so Realmuto solves their needs very well.

The Rays have plenty of young talent on their roster, from hitters like Junior Caminero, Chandler Simpson, and Carson Williams to pitchers like Ryan Pepiot and Shane Baz, and Realmuto could prove to be a strong veteran presence on a very young and promising team.
