2026 MLB Playoff Power Rankings: World Series Predictions

The 2026 MLB regular season has officially come to a close, and the MLB Playoffs are set to begin, with 12 teams ready to battle it out, with eight set to play in the Wild Card round starting tomorrow.

Under the new format, it can be jarring how fast that first best-of-three playoff series goes, as some of the teams who made the playoffs may not even make it to October if they get swept.

Today, we are completing our final Power Rankings of the 2026 season, with these being the most important: our 2026 MLB Playoff Power Rankings. I have ranked each of the 12 teams remaining, breaking down their chances of making a run to win it all this year.

After the Power Rankings, you will find a graphic with the playoff bracket now that the field has been set, and we will close with my prediction for who will make it to the World Series and who will come out victorious. Without further ado, let’s start by diving into the rankings of the top teams left standing this baseball season.

12. Houston Astros (Previous Ranking: 13)

The AL West division race turned into a real pillow fight between the two teams from Texas, the Rangers and the Houston Astros. The Astros ended up winning the battle, but they also earned the distinction of being the worst-ever playoff team, with their .500 record being enough to punch their ticket.

Thanks to no re-seeding once the Wild Card field is set, the Astros get to host their matchup against the White Sox despite finishing three games worse than Chicago. The Astros making a run to the World Series after the season they just had would be a Cinderella story, to say the least.

11. Chicago White Sox (Previous Ranking: 10)

The Chicago White Sox are a tough team to assess, because on one hand, even making it to the playoffs is a remarkable accomplishment for a team coming off three-straight 100-loss seasons.

With that said, the White Sox were largely in the driver’s seat in the AL Central this season, holding onto first place for much of June, and basically all of July and August. The tide turned in September, when the Guardians reeled off 16 wins in their final 25 games to grab the division title.

Chicago has a puncher’s chance to make it really far in the postseason, as they have the easiest matchup in the Wild Card round, and then would meet their division foe in the ALDS, rather than having to face the much more threatening Tampa Bay Rays.

In 2023, we saw the Rangers lose the division to the Astros, only to claw their way out of the Wild Card and past Houston, all the way to a World Series title. The White Sox would love to follow a similar narrative this October.

10. Cleveland Guardians (Previous Ranking: 12)

Winning a division has never been sweeter for a team than it was for the Cleveland Guardians this year. Not only did they get to enjoy their third-straight AL Central title, but it came with a bye from the Wild Card round, and what looks like a rather inviting path to the ALCS.

Now there are no guarantees in the playoffs, and we have seen plenty of teams use the momentum they gain from a Wild Card victory as a springboard past their opponent in the ALDS, but you still have to love the position you are in if you’re Cleveland.

The three best teams in the American League this year all belong to the AL East, and those teams will be duking it out on the other side of the AL bracket until the ALCS.

9. Philadelphia Phillies (Previous Ranking: 5)

The Phillies nearly had to back their way into October, as the Arizona Diamondbacks did not do them any favors until the very end. With their magic number sitting at just two, Philly lost four games in a row last week, while the D-backs reeled off six-straight before their final two games of the season.

In the penultimate game, Arizona lost to drop the Phillies’ magic number to 1; then both the Phillies won and the D-backs lost on the final day of the season. Still, that labored finish has left the Phillies without Zack Wheeler until Game 3 of the Wild Card, and has lined them up for a date with the Atlanta Braves.

At least the Phillies are in, though, and with a roster full of battle-tested veterans, you can’t count Philly out from turning this into a Red October, regardless of how they limped to the end of September.

8. Boston Red Sox (Previous Ranking: 8)

The Boston Red Sox looked like they were dead in the water in the middle of June, but a miraculous stretch where they won 20 out of 22 games, including nine in a row heading into the All-Star break, and then six more coming out of it, vaulting them back into contention.

Now the Red Sox find themselves exactly where they were a year ago. Set to square off against their chief division rivals in a best-of-three series played at Yankee Stadium. It’s hard to find a better matchup than that.

While the Yankees finished with a better record and deserve to be ranked as the better team heading into October, nobody would be surprised if the Red Sox knocked them off and even gave the Tampa Bay Rays a run for their money in the ALDS.

7. Chicago Cubs (Previous Ranking: 6)

Few teams can rival the starting nine that the Chicago Cubs can run out there each day, with their combination of great defenders and plenty of hitters who can mash. Led by the runaway NL MVP favorite Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs are a scary matchup for any team.

The big question is going to be how their playoff rotation stacks up. They will be relying on trade acquisitions like Clay Holmes, Kevin Gausman, and David Peterson, all of whom have come with varied results, along with Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga, who both had an up-and-down year.

If Craig Counsell can play his cards right managing his pitching staff, this is a team that can find some magic this October.

6. Atlanta Braves (Previous Ranking: 4)

You might be surprised to find the Braves ranked outside of the top five, but that is really a testament to the other teams ranked ahead of them, rather than a knock on Atlanta.

The Brewers and Dodgers proved to be better than the Braves to earn themselves byes, and the Padres just happen to be the hottest team in baseball.

The Braves still should be seen as the favorites in their first-round matchup against Philly, and they can certainly hold their own against the Dodgers, especially if they can somehow find their way to getting Chris Sale the ball in a Game 5.

The question is who takes the ball outside of Sale, although Tyler Mahle has clearly earned Game 2 with the way he pitched after coming over at the trade deadline. The rest is a bit up in the air for the Braves, but they at least have a good enough bullpen to get creative and overcome a lack of depth at the top of their rotation.

5. New York Yankees (Previous Ranking: 7)

Aaron Judge’s status is a question mark, but the Yankees have been winning games without him for months now, and that should not be discounted. They also have about as good a playoff rotation as any team outside of the Dodgers with Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodon.

For the Yankees to make it all the way, having Judge healthy would be massive, but this is still a team that can compete regardless, especially if their starters get on a roll.

4. San Diego Padres (Previous Ranking: 9)

The San Diego Padres did anything but back their way into the postseason. Down the stretch, they lapped the competition. On July 23rd, the Padres were sitting with a 50-53 record, four games out of a playoff spot with five teams ahead of them for the final Wild Card spot.

A five-game winning streak sparked a run where they won eight of their final nine games before the trade deadline, and it was off to the races from there. The Padres have the best record in baseball since July 24th at 41-18. Better than both the Brewers and the Rays, who each went 39-21.

Their path through October will not be easy, as they likely have to go through both the Brewers and the Dodgers if they want to make it to the World Series. But the Padres are a team that nobody wants to see in October either.

3. Tampa Bay Rays (Previous Ranking: 2)

If we were ranking these teams based on who has the best chance to win the World Series, the Tampa Bay Rays may go atop this list. The American League side of the bracket is far weaker than the National League side, and the Rays have a bye through the first round.

Where things could get dicey for the Rays is in the ALDS, where they will meet one of their two chief division rivals, depending on who wins the Wild Card matchup between the Yankees and the Red Sox.

Still, the Rays have been the best team in the American League all season, and they certainly have what it takes to prove that notion come October.

2. Milwaukee Brewers (Previous Ranking: 1)

Based solely on the regular season, the Milwaukee Brewers should have the top spot on these rankings. They have turned the regular season into a science and are the best team in baseball at navigating 162.

The problem is what happens beyond that, as this is a team that has not won a game in the NLCS since they took the Dodgers to a Game 7 back in 2018. Last year, the Brewers at least won a playoff series. But they went on to get swept by the Dodgers in blowout fashion.

Can they finally exorcise their October demons and make it to the promised land?

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (Previous Ranking: 3)

There is almost nothing that could have been done by any team during the regular season for me not to rank the Los Angeles Dodgers as the team to beat this October.

We are talking about the two-time defending World Series champions, who are going to roll out a pair of two-time Cy Youngs in Blake Snell and Tarik Skubal in their rotation, and there is a world where neither is the ace. Because if you watched Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitch last October, there was no better pitcher on the planet.

If the Dodgers have an Achilles heel, it’s their bullpen. But with Edwin Diaz coming on strong as of late, and Roki Sasaki back in the pen as well, it feels like there is a winning combination to be found amongst that group.

2026 MLB Playoff Bracket

World Series Prediction: Padres vs. Rays

We close today’s article with my personal World Series prediction. In a field with this many great teams, there is no wrong answer on who you think can win it all. Unless, of course, you pick the Astros; then again, they may make me eat my words, as anything can happen this time of year.

My prediction is that the Rays will assert themselves as the clear best team in the American League on that side of the bracket, with a likely tougher matchup in the ALDS than they will have in the ALCS.

Meanwhile, I expect the National League playoffs to be an absolute bloodbath.

The Padres have their work cut out for them with a tough matchup against the Cubs in the Wild Card, and the best team in baseball by record waiting for them in the NLDS. Provided they made it that far, the Dodgers would likely be waiting for them in the NLCS.

At the end of the day, I just think this is a Padres team that has that something special right now, and I think they can ride their momentum all the way to the World Series.

The problem is that once they get there, I think they will be exhausted. And a fresh Tampa Bay Rays team will be waiting for them. Two teams that have never won it all, and one that hasn’t been there since the turn of the century (San Diego).

I think it’s the Rays’ year. But the Padres are my Dark Horse to make some noise in the National League, which would make them the team of October. Especially if they were the ones to knock off the Dodgers.

Prediction: Rays beat the Padres in six games.
