Best MLB Prop Today

Los Angeles Dodgers at Minnesota Twins

7:40 PM Eastern

The Dodgers are limping into the Twin Cities on Monday night after dropping their series to the Orioles. Eric Lauer is taking the mound for his fifth appearance as a Dodger. Averaging 5.1 innings pitched and two earned runs per start since being acquired, Lauer has quietly turned his season around helping Los Angeles to wins in each appearance.

However, Lauer has given up 18 hits and five home runs while wearing Dodgers blue. Throughout the season, right-handed bats have been the culprit behind all six doubles, the only triple, and 12 of the 16 home runs he has allowed.

Enter Byron Buxton. One of the more dangerous right-handed hitters in the league and one of the most talked about trade deadline commodities. His 24 home runs are good for third in the league, and his past 15 days have been red hot with a .360 AVG, 1.187 OPS, three doubles, and six home runs.

Buxton has averaged three total bases per game over his last 10 contests, clearing the 1.5 line in 70% of them. Let’s not skip over the fact that he has homered in four of those games as well.

Buxton is primed to take advantage of Lauer’s struggles with the long ball, who averages 2.45 HR/9. Although Lauer gets hit more consistently by left-handed hitters, the 13.3% barrel rate and lopsided ratio of 19 of 23 extra-base hits succumbed to right-handed hitters seem to point in Buxton’s favor.

The key will be to lay off the changeup, as Buxton’s slugging percentages when facing 4-seam fastballs and cutters (Lauer’s two most relied on pitches) are .736 and 1.000. He also slugs .556 or better against the rest of Lauer’s pitch mix.

It should not come as a surprise that this has all led to a .400 batting average with two home runs across 12 head-to-head plate appearances. Lauer needs to tread carefully if he wants to avoid a repeat of the 2-for-3 day with two home runs that Buxton had the last time they faced off.
