Seiya Suzuki Is Hitting His Way to a Massive Payday

Since coming over to Major League Baseball from Japan, Seiya Suzuki has been one of the best and most consistent players in the game. After a solid rookie season in 2022, he has steadily developed into a star and appears to be reaching his full potential in all aspects of the game this year.

Suzuki has looked like his normal self at the plate, posting a 135 wRC+ and on pace to hit 27 home runs. This is nothing out of the ordinary for him, though he is having a borderline elite season on the defensive side of the game. Pairing this with his top-of-the-line offense has already resulted in a career-high 3.7 fWAR with multiple weeks left in the season.

This breakout could not have come at a better time for Suzuki, as he is set to hit the free agent market this winter. The strength of this year’s free agent class could also work in his favor, as he will be one of, if not the best, bats available.

He is one of the best outfielders in baseball, and somebody is going to pay him like it.

A Career Year in 2026

Seiya Suzuki opened his season a few weeks late after suffering a knee injury in the World Baseball Classic. That did not stop him from getting off to a strong start, though, as he posted a 124 wRC+ while hitting 15 home runs in the first half. It was a pretty typical start for him.

However, coming out of the All-Star break, he has been even better. In that 36-game stretch, he is slashing .273/.399/.511 with a 154 wRC+ and has already racked up 1.7 fWAR. His power is on full display, as his slugging percentage has risen almost 50 points since the break.

He has gone from a solid first half to a great second half, pushing his overall season numbers toward career-best territory. Overall, he has an .842 OPS and has been consistently providing for the Chicago Cubs, batting second nearly every day.

His full-season pace is equally impressive. He is tracking for 27 home runs, 91 runs batted in, and 92 runs scored. To go with that, at his current pace, he will finish with 4.5 fWAR, which is a full win higher than his previous career high.

His ability to perform at a high level annually is so impressive. This year, however, it is even more impressive, as he has taken his defensive ability to a whole new level while maintaining his elite bat.

A Defensive Turnaround

When he was in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, Seiya Suzuki was one of the better defenders in the league. He won the league’s Gold Glove Award in five of his last six seasons there before signing with the Cubs in 2022.

However, he did not adjust well defensively in Chicago. In each of his first four seasons in MLB, he was a negative defender according to his fielding run value. This resulted in him eventually seeing the majority of his time as the team’s designated hitter.

With right field opening back up in 2026, though, he was given another opportunity to play defense every day. So far, he has completely turned things around.

He has played 776.1 innings in right field this season. Looking at the advanced numbers, you’ll see that he is running career highs in each stat while making a career-low in errors thus far. Here’s how he stacks up against all right fielders this season.

After years of being an unreliable defender, Suzuki is making a case to take home a Gold Glove this season. He has already recorded a career-high in fWAR, and with 28 games remaining, he could continue to add to that.

All of this will factor into his market this winter and make him one of the top bats set to hit free agency. But is he the top bat? Let’s dig into it.

The Best Bat on the Market?

Relative to previous years, this upcoming free agent class is on the weaker side. For players like Suzuki, though, that could work in their favor.

The top bat on the market does remain in question, but it appears that Suzuki and Randy Arozarena will be the hottest players on that front. They are actually extremely comparable players. Both have established themselves as consistently productive right-handed hitters and are in the midst of career years.

Arozarena has been fantastic this year, slashing .272/.369/.460 with 20 home runs. He is running with a career-high 143 wRC+ and has been one of the few bright spots on the Mariners’ offense.

He does have the edge over Suzuki in the stolen base department, totaling 20 to Suzuki’s three. However, there is also a gap when it comes to defense. Arozarena has a -6 fielding run value on the year, which mostly aligns with his career numbers. Suzuki has posted a +8 fielding run value, which is a career best.

These factors have combined to give the two nearly identical fWAR totals, with Suzuki at 3.7 and Arozarena with the slight edge at 3.8. The two are also similar in age, with Suzuki only about six months older.

Regardless, there is a case to be made that Seiya Suzuki will be the top bat on the market. Thanks to his defensive evolution and year-to-year consistency, he is one of the most valuable right-handed hitters in baseball.

If he is able to finish out his season playing like he has all year, he will be in a prime position to receive a massive payday.
