Weighing the Pros and Cons of the Padres Trading Mason Miller

We are just one week away from the MLB trade deadline, and the San Diego Padres find themselves in one of the most difficult positions in baseball.

Despite sitting two games out of the final National League playoff spot, they sit at .500 and have plenty of questions to answer before the deadline.

The offense has finally started to show signs of life, but the rotation remains one of the league’s worst. That leaves A.J. Preller with two very different paths forward. He can buy, betting the offense has truly turned a corner while adding the starting pitching needed to make a playoff push. Or he can sell strategically, remaining competitive while retooling the roster for 2027 and beyond.

At the center of that decision is Mason Miller.

Trading the best closer in baseball would be a difficult pill to swallow, especially for a team within striking distance of a playoff spot, and due to the capital the Padres spent to acquire him. But given San Diego’s current position and Miller’s trade value, it’s a conversation worth having.

The obvious reason for trading Miller is that his trade value is at an all-time high. 

Not only has he been the most dominant pitcher in baseball, but he is also under team control for three more seasons. For a contending team, that could mean four postseason runs with the best closer in the game. That combination makes Miller one of the most valuable trade assets in baseball.

According to Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Padres’ asking price is two top-100 prospects, and there are teams capable of meeting it.

The Dodgers have several top-100 prospects who could headline a deal, including Josue De Paula, Mike Sirota and Zyhir Hope. However, it’s hard to imagine that Preller would deal Miller to a division rival. 

The Brewers are another intriguing fit. They have Jesús Made, Luis Peña, Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara, any of whom could headline a package. If Milwaukee wants to avoid parting with multiple top prospects, it also has major league-ready pitching in Logan Henderson, Shane Drohan and Brandon Sproat.

Boston could put together a similar package with prospects such as Franklin Arias, Anthony Eyanson and Justin Gonzalez, along with a pitcher like Jake Bennett.

And those are just a few examples. The Cubs, Yankees, White Sox and Pirates all have the prospect depth and young major league talent to put together a competitive offer.

In short, if the Padres decide to trade Mason Miller, they have an opportunity to bring back the kind of return that can reshape the organization for years to come.

The Cons of Trading Mason Miller

On the flip side, it’s a luxury to have the best closer in baseball on your team.

Despite the flaws on this roster, the Padres are still in the playoff picture. If they can stay within the hunt for a wild-card spot over the next week, they could be a couple of starting pitchers away from becoming a legitimate threat.

If they do make the postseason, Miller is their biggest advantage. He essentially turns every game into an eight-inning contest. That’s a massive weapon in October.

There’s also an argument for patience. Even if Preller holds onto Miller, the Padres still have him under team control for three more seasons. They can use this offseason to retool for 2027 without giving up the most valuable reliever in baseball.

It’s also worth remembering that just about everything that could have gone wrong this season did. The rotation never came together, key players underperformed, and injuries piled up. If the offense continues to trend in the right direction and the front office builds a legitimate rotation this winter, the Padres could be right back in contention next season. If that happens, having Miller at the back end of the bullpen becomes an enormous advantage.

And if things don’t go according to plan, the Padres can always revisit a Miller trade next deadline. The return probably wouldn’t be quite as massive as it could be this summer, but he’d still be one of the most coveted players on the market.

There is no real right or wrong answer when it comes to trading Mason Miller. It all comes down to philosophy.

Would you rather keep a guaranteed shutdown ninth inning for the next several years, or cash in on one of the most valuable trade assets in baseball to replenish the farm system and strengthen the rotation? That’s the dilemma facing the Padres at this year’s trade deadline.

It’s hard to imagine A.J. Preller selling, especially with the Padres still in the mix for a playoff spot. But if another team is willing to meet the asking price and overwhelm San Diego with an offer, it’s also hard to imagine him saying no.

No matter what happens, the decision on Mason Miller could shape the direction of the franchise for years to come.
