Spencer Horwitz Is Embracing the Ups and Downs of 2026
Spencer Horwitz has embraced and overcome every challenge to become one of the biggest impact players Pittsburgh has to offer.
During the first half of the 2026 MLB season, the Pittsburgh Pirates looked like an offensive juggernaut. Led by the breakout of Oneil Cruz and the new additions of Brandon Lowe and Ryan O’Hearn, the club was beginning to turn a corner.
However, one of the main contributors fell under the radar: Spencer Horwitz.
Originally brought in through a trade with the Guardians that sent Luis Ortiz and a pair of minor league arms to Cleveland, Horwitz has established himself as a key contributor to the offensive group in Pittsburgh. Before the All-Star break, Horwitz had a real shot to represent the Pirates in Philadelphia, as he had posted an OBP near .400 with a 133 wRC+.
Unfortunately, disaster struck on June 24, as Horwitz suffered a hamstring strain that kept him off the field for nearly an entire month. Then, once he began the rehab process to return from the injury, Horwitz suffered a concussion after being plunked in the helmet.
Fast forward to the present day, and Horwitz is back on the field, producing at the top of the Pirates’ lineup and embracing every single one of the challenges that have been thrown his way. Even if it hasn’t been an easy journey, nothing was going to stop him from getting healthy and continuing to make an impact.
Adjusting to the Leadoff Role
With Spencer Horwitz proving to be such a lethal on-base threat early on this season, the Pirates decided to give him a shot to lead off and be the table setter for this offense. Over the past few years, the club has struggled to solidify one player in this role — regardless of the makeup of the roster — which gives Horwitz a real chance to help break this trend.
“Yeah, it’s been fun,” Horwitz said when asked about getting chances at the top of the order. “I think I’ve hit in six or seven spots in the lineup, and to me, it’s just another spot and a chance to get the guys going with the first at-bat of the game.”
Horwitz has done just that, producing nearly every single time manager Don Kelly pencils him in at the top of the order. In his 110 at-bats in this role, Horwitz has slashed .273/.385/.445 with a wRC+ over 130, regularly setting up chances for the heart of the order. With the newfound long-ball lethality this group possesses, providing extra opportunities with runners on base has been key.
The club’s belief in him as their table setter has been reflected in his time on the field. For example, he’s been given 34 more at-bats at the leadoff spot than his second-most at-bats in another role (76 ABs as the seven-hole hitter).
As it currently stands, the Pirates are third in baseball in runs scored with 642, and it’s reasonable to assume that Horwitz’s ability to adjust and get on base early is one of the main contributing factors for this.
Dealing With the Hamstring Injury
Despite succeeding on the field, Horwitz’s 2026 season hasn’t taken place without its challenges. As previously mentioned, the combination of his hamstring injury and his concussion kept him off the major league field for 38 days, and it was hard for him to be away, especially given the excitement around the team this summer.
“When I was down in Florida coming back, I was watching every game,” Horwitz said. “I had so much FOMO just not being in the dugout, not being in the lineup, and just wanted to be with the guys.”
Even if he wasn’t physically present in the dugout as he desired, Horwitz tried his best to stay connected to the games. This type of connection to the big league team is exactly what breeds a winning clubhouse culture, and it’s a similar sentiment that other injured Pirates have expressed this season.
Postgame on August 18, Oneil Cruz expressed this while speaking with the media at his locker.
“I was watching the games on TV during my rehab, and I was thinking that I wanted to be here as soon as possible to help the team,” Cruz said when reflecting on his rehab process.
It speaks volumes about the infectious nature of this team that every injured Pirate is making an extreme effort to get back and wishing they were still in the dugout with the guys.
“I enjoyed playing with them all so much, and there’s something special that’s coming to Pittsburgh, and everyone could feel it,” Horwitz said.
Knowing that such an exciting group awaited his return in the big leagues certainly served as extra motivation to return strongly from both injuries. While it couldn’t have been easy, Horwitz battled through, and the grueling time spent in Florida working toward a return is proving to be worth it.
Riding the Steel-City Energy
When Horwitz was first acquired by the Pirates, there was a lot of hope that things were beginning to turn around and that the club was heading in the right direction. Just two years into his Pirates career, Horwitz has begun to experience firsthand what this is like and see this vision begin to come to fruition.
“It’s exciting,” Horwitz said while smiling. “The fans have absolutely shown out, and we appreciate it, and it means a lot to us. We want to bring winning baseball back to Pittsburgh.”
Even if the Pirates currently sit 5.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot with a 63-66 record, this is a drastic improvement from where they sat at this point last season. On August 19, 2025, the Pirates held a record of 53-74, which placed them 15 games out of the playoff picture.
While it’s an uphill battle, the postseason isn’t out of the picture for Pittsburgh just yet, and Horwitz is ready to finish the season strong regardless of what happens.
“Yeah, just finish strong,” Horwitz said when asked about his goals for the rest of the season. “Whatever happens with us in the playoffs or not, we just got to keep building, keep growing, and keep learning.”
If Horwitz continues to produce as he has at the plate, he will certainly achieve his goal of finishing the season strong. Despite facing adversity due to his health, Horwitz has embraced and overcome every challenge and become one of the biggest impact players that Pittsburgh has to offer.
