Run for Dad, Run for a Cause: Bradley Garner’s Story

LEXINGTON, VA – April 4th, 2026
For most, just another Saturday in college baseball. For junior outfielder Bradley Garner and the VMI Keydets, it meant a little more.
The series finale against Wofford held a special place for Bradley: It was the Alzheimer’s Awareness Game. It was held to support the Garner family, whose father passed away from early-onset Alzheimer’s, which only affects a small percentage of those with Alzheimer’s, when Bradley was a child.
Bradley’s sister, Frankie, threw out the first pitch, another special moment they’d share together. The two will also run the 130th Boston Marathon on April 20 in tribute to their late father.
That’s just one day after the Keydets wrap up a series with Western Carolina. In the midst of the season, it’s a feat most would never fathom. What started out as a small idea quickly became reality, as Garner dove in headfirst, signing up and training alongside the demands of a full college baseball season, despite having little experience in endurance training.
“He taught me resilience and to find positive things in any situation,” Bradley reflected on his relationship with his father and the many life lessons he carries with him to this day. Garner expressed his gratitude to the staff and program supporting both the game and himself.
Bradley is not only running for his dad, a cause, but something larger, his family. To support Bradley and Frankie and learn more about their story, visit their website.
