Jeff Conine’s Top 5 Most Difficult Pitchers, Longest MLB Games, and Why Yadi Is a HOF’er

Outside the Box with Jeff Conine: Episode 15

Jeff Conine

We spend a lot of time on the podcast talking about the bright moments of Jeff Conine’s career, and there are a lot of them. So, I wanted to change it up a little bit this time. Niner was such a consistent hitter that I wanted to take a dive into which pitchers game him fits. Many of the players on this list are not guys you would expect.

Mariano Rivera? Jeff hit .357 off of him in 17 PA’s. Greg Maddux? .313 batting average. But Tim Wakefield…Jeff was 4 for 41 against. We go through each of the arms that gave Niner the most trouble, and of course add in some of the notable pitchers he had success against.

After the marathon 16 inning ballgame between the Dodgers and Padres, Jeff jumps on the opportunity the dunk all over my hot take that I actually enjoy the man on second base extra innings rule. I knew it was coming, and it’s very fair. That beings said, the 16 inning game last week was the longest game by three innings since the new rule was implemented. Jeff recalls some of his longest and most miserable games, and takes you through the psyche of a player in the never-ending regular season match-ups.

Yadier Molina recently announced that he will be playing his final season next year. I ask Jeff why some people are crazy enough to believe that Yadi is not a hall of famer. Jeff was baffled that people out there actually think that, which made for a really awesome conversation about how special Molina’s career has been.
